The university in a changing context: integrating science, technology and innovation

The article deals with the transformations of the role of the university within the scope of the National Systems of Innovation (NSI), as the institution has been urged to internalise different functions in addition to the teaching, research and extension activities traditionally carried out. The objective is to conduct a discussion about the challenges facing the university in the twenty-first century, specifically those directly related to the support of activities of protection, transfer and management of intellectual property (IP). It also presents the current context of the activities conducted by the Innovation Agencies of three major universities in the country: University of Campinas (Unicamp), University of São Paulo (USP) and the Federal University of São Carlos (UFSCar). It is noted that even in institutions heavily focused on research and development (R&D) activities, with explicit actions in the university-society relationship, there are still several obstacles to be overcome with regard to the promotion of IP and innovation.
